چکیده
Abstract Brachionus calyciflorus is a recently described monogonont rotifer species complex that comprises four species. Resource competition between sympatric sibling rotifer species
Mechanisms underlying competitive interactions are important in understanding the structure of planktonic communities, particularly the coexistence of similar species. Here we present experimental results of exploitative competition among three sympatric sibling species of the Brachionus plicatilis complex for two differently-sized species of food microalgae. These three rotifer species are to ...
متن کاملSelective introgression of paracentric inversions between two sibling species of the Anopheles gambiae complex.
The Anopheles gambiae complex includes the major vectors of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa where > 80% of all world-wide cases occur. These mosquitoes are characterized by chromosomal inversions associated to the speciation process and to intraspecific ecological and behavioral flexibility. It has been postulated that introgressive hybridization has selectively transferred inversions on the seco...
متن کاملPremating Reproductive Barriers between Hybridising Cricket Species Differing in Their Degree of Polyandry
Understanding speciation hinges on understanding how reproductive barriers arise between incompletely isolated populations. Despite their crucial role in speciation, prezygotic barriers are relatively poorly understood and hard to predict. We use two closely related cricket species, Gryllus bimaculatus and G. campestris, to experimentally investigate premating barriers during three sequential m...
متن کاملThe basis of natural and artificial postzygotic hybridization barriers in Arabidopsis species.
The success or failure of interspecific crosses is vital to evolution and to agriculture, but much remains to be learned about the nature of hybridization barriers. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain postzygotic barriers, including negative interactions between diverged sequences, global genome rearrangements, and widespread epigenetic reprogramming. Another explanation is imbalan...
متن کاملMorphological Similarity and Ecological Overlap in Two Rotifer Species
Co-occurrence of cryptic species raises theoretically relevant questions regarding their coexistence and ecological similarity. Given their great morphological similitude and close phylogenetic relationship (i.e., niche retention), these species will have similar ecological requirements and are expected to have strong competitive interactions. This raises the problem of finding the mechanisms t...
